Community Council

Durrow Community Council was formed over 40 years ago to serve the people of Durrow in various tasks or projects. It has been at the forefront of many long running and essential organisations and events over these years. The Community Council was responsible for the setting up of Durrow Credit Union, which has greatly benefited the town and surrounding areas. From the Community Council the Durrow/Cullohill Community Alert was formed, which has been a very valuable asset to our community. The care of the elderly and those living alone is of utmost importance to us.

The very first FAS scheme in our town was co-ordinated by the Community Council. A sub committee of Durrow Community Council run the local Community Hall. This hall provides sporting and recreational amenities for the youth of the area. Various teams use this hall to their benefit.

Every February Durrow Community Council issue invitations to all those age 60 and over to attend a highly organised Senior Citizens Party. Approximately 160 people attend and are treated to a four-course meal in the Castle Arms Hotel followed by refreshments and high quality entertainment for the afternoon.

Also catering for the same age range we organise an annual tour, which includes the bus journey to our destination, two attractions and a hotel lunch. Again this is a major success and a welcome addition to the years planned projects.

In 2007 a sub committee of the Community Council was formed to run the Meals on Wheels serving Durrow and the surrounding areas. This has brought employment and a valued service to the area. Durrow Community Council are in the process of creating an Elderly Visitation Programme. It is hoped that this will be as big a success as our other projects aimed at the elderly or isolated.

Each year Durrow Community Council provides the finances for Durrow to have a large Christmas tree erected in The Green area. Lights have been purchased for various areas also. Each St. Patrick’s Day members of the Community Council take part in the Durrow Parade. This has proved to be a successful event for the committee.

In August of each year members of the committee come together to take part in the Scarecrow making competition during the Durrow Scarecrow Festival. Durrow Community Council has always been at the forefront of dealing with day-to-day issues arising in the area. If contact needs to be made with the Local County Council or other agencies, committee members are happy to assist in having any issues resolved in a speedy manner.
