Tidy Towns

Durrow is located on the south of County Laois, close to the Kilkenny border. The village has grown due to the development of housing schemes, both private and Local Authority. With the opening of the new Motorway in May 2010 Durrow has seen huge changes. While we do not have the same volume of traffic we still have an average of twenty to thirty trucks per hour passing through the village. The N77 from Kilkenny to Portlaoise has seen an increase of traffic route.

The village Tidy Towns Committee is a very active group involved in a wide range of projects such as the St. Patrick’s Day Parade and the Scarecrow Festival. We have regular meetings and hold weekly work nights in all areas, from residential, street and amenity areas, over the summer months. We publish regular reports in the Parish Newsletter and local newspapers.

We work with our local Community Employment Scheme who gives us great help with the general day-to-day maintenance and upkeep of the village. We provide colour in the village through the planting of flowerbeds and erecting flower baskets on lamp posts.

Durrow Tidy Towns Committee is a member of Laois County Council Tidy Towns Federation. Members of our committee attend the Federation meetings in County Hall, Portlaoise. We yearly increase our National Tidy Towns marks by an average of 4%. Our main funding comes from an annual raffle, which is very well supported, and a grant from the Tidy Towns Federation.
