LAOIS COMMUNITY NETWORK

Laois Community Network have set up a Temporary Office in the Presentation Centre Durrow every Wednesday from 10.00 a.m. to 1.00 p.m. Do come along if you need help or information as an individual or a group with business ideas and wish to apply for funding to develop business plans.

Laois Community Network would like to invite you to our seminars on ‘Alternative Farming Enterprises’.

Tuesday 7th February – Ostrich Production. Guest Speakers – Alisha Stewart, The Curragh and David Thompson, Rathdowney.

Wednesday 8th February – Mushroom Production in the 1990’s. Guest Speaker – Des Finamore, Marketing Director, Carbury Mushrooms, Kildare.

Monday 23rd January: Jackpot of £1,450 was shared by three winners; Dermot Woods, Carrigan St. Durrow, John Bolger, c/o Heywood C.S. Ballinakill, Sean Cashin, Carrigan St. Durrow. Each received £483.

Monday 30th January: Jackpot of £250 was won by Mrs. E. Morrissey, Carrigan Street.

DURROW & DISTRICT CAMERA CLUB

The Junior Branch held the second stage of it’s Grand Prix competition on Thursday 27th January. The theme was “Portrait” and approx 20 prints were entered.

The results were as follows; 1st Jason Walsh, 2nd Jason Walsh, 3rd David Dunne, 4th Claire Doyle, 5th Claire Donohue, 6th Claire Donohue.

With these results now in, the standing is as follows, with two competitions from six now completed;

Jason Walsh 20 points, Kevin Donohue 10 points, Claire Doyle 9 points, David Dunne 4 points, Claire Donohue 4 points, Erin Kelly 3 points, Aisling Ryan 2 points.

The next competition is “Still Life” and this will be judged on 23rd February.

The Senior Branch also completed it’s second competition in the Eddie Moore Memorial Shield. The theme for this competition was “Still Life” and just under 30 prints were submitted. Results as follows;

1st Liam Donohue, 2nd Martin walsh, 3rd Liam Donohue, 4th eugene Meegan, 5th Martin Walsh, Joint 6th L. Donohue & E. Meegan.

Two competitions completed, four remaining. Points table;

Laim Donohue 27.5 points, Eugene meegan 9 points, Martin Walsh 8 points, Breda Kelly 6 points, Frank Campion 1.5 points.

The next Senior Competition is “Landscape” and will be judged on Monday 27th February.

DURROW FIRE BRIGADE

Durrow Fire Brigade have been very busy recently with several chimney fires and a lot of flooding. During the past week the Brigade dealt with severe flooding on the Derry Road and a great effort by residents, fire personnel and workers kept the damage to dwelling houses to a minimum.

LIONS SOCCER CLUB

Once again the Lions Soccer Club had some winners in the South East Draw held in Oilgate, Co. Wexford on Friday 20th January. Winner of Garden Shed was Eugene Meegan, Ballyragget. Two £100 winners were Larry Mahony and A. Monnelly. Congratulations to all three winners.

DURROW LADIES GROUP

Durrow Ladies Group A.G.M. will be held on Tuesday 7th February, at 8.00 p.m. sharp in The Durrow Inn. Presentation of First Aid Certificates will be made on the night.

The Group are hoping to run an Assertive Course during the month of March. This will be open to non-members. Anyone interested please contact Bernie Healy – Phone 0502 – 36299.

DURROW CIVIL DEFENCE

Durrow Civil Defence Unit were called out last Friday evening at 6.00 p.m. to assist in the implementation of the emergency plan to combat flooding in the county. Fourteen personell from the Durrow Unit, along with the Mountmellick Unit, assisted Gardai, Fire Brigade personell and the County Council in Portlaoise and Mountmellick.

The role of the Civil Defence was to respond to calls for sandbagging, and the delivery and collection of sandbags. We also carried out evacuations of people from flooded areas. These people were then housed overnight in St. Vincent’s Hospital, Mountmellick. In Portlaoise the Civil Defence were used with the Gardai for traffic diversion.

Also Radio Operators from the Durrow Unit were kept at County Hall Control to relay all the messages between the emergency services and Council staff. This task was carried out by means of VHF and UHF radios and telephones.

The Durrow Unit came off duty at 4.30 a.m. on Saturday morning, however we remained on standby throughout the weekend.

DURROW & DISTRICT ANGLING CLUB

The Annual General Meeting of Durrow & District Anglers was held in The Durrow Inn on 26th January. Elected to run the club for the coming year were;

Chairman: Con Geoghegan, Vice Chairman: Jim Dwyer, Treasurer: Jim Delahunty, Secretary: Michael Walsh, Committee: Jim Coffey, Denis Lynch, Pat Bowden, Mick O’Rourke, Brendan Sheppard, Mick Nolan and Seamus Coffey.

The club and it’s members would like to thank all the land owners in the Parish for the use of their land last season.

As soon as floodwaters recede work will commence to erect the new footbridge over the river Gully where it enters the Nore in Dunmore Wood. This should be of great benefit to anyone who likes to walk the riverbank in Spring and Summertime.

ALL IRELAND PIKE FISHING FINAL

The top 50 anglers in Ireland will fish the final in Co. Mayo on Saturday 11th February over 5 hours. The top ten anglers from this will represent Ireland later this year in an International against England. The Durrow & District Angling Club has three members through to the final. They are; Jim Delahunty, 1990 Irish Finalist, Mick O’Rourke, 1992 Irish Finalist and Mick Walsh, 1990 & 1992 Irish Finalist, and 1991 & 1993 Irish team member.

With a bit of luck on Saturday 11th the club may have three members on the Irish team. Our best wishes go with them.

Durrow Community Council will hold the annual Senior Citizen’s Party in the Castle Arms Hotel on Sunday 26th February. Invitations will be issued shortly to all Senior Citizens.

CUB SCOUT NEWS

On Friday 27th January 24 Cubs and 5 Leaders went to Mountrath to take part in the Annual Cub Table Quiz. Two Cub Packs took part, Mountrath and Durrow, consisting of six tables of four from each group. Mountmellick were unable to attend due to the bad flooding in the area. It was a very closely contested quiz with four teams running very close at the end. At the end of the final round both Mountrath and Durrow were on level score and went to a tie-break. It was a very exciting finish with Durrow scoring three points and Mountrath two points out of a final round of five. The winning team were as follows; Muireann Phelan, John Phelan, Jonathan Stapleton and Marie Clancy. The trophies will be presented at a later date.
