The Lions Football Club Girls U12 A and B teams managed by Denise Kelly and Robbie Campion entered the Kilkenny United Tournament held at The Watershed complex on Kilkenny City’s south side this Saturday morning, March 31st. The tournament featured top teams from Dublin and Meath with Cherry Orchard and Glebe North amongst the well known sides participating.

All teams played each other on the day before being seeded for the finals which were played in the mid-afternoon following a mornings full of action. The Lions A team reached the tier 2 final whilst The Lions B team reached the tier 3 final which was a great achievement for the girls considering the standard of opposition.

The Lions A team were very impressive in the final against Kilnamanagh AFC emerging with a 7-0 win. The Lions B were due to play Dunboyne FC in their final, however Dunboyne were unable to field a team and The Lions B were awarded the final. Elsewhere Glebe North won the tier 1 final against a strong Cherry Orchard side.

Following the finals there was a presentation of trophies for all the winning teams with Lions A and B picking up their trophies to much applause and excitement. Thereafter, a really special (and unexpected) awards were then made for the top-scorer in the tournament and player of the tournament, with a double cheer for Lions FC’s Shannon Kelly who won both awards.

It was a really proud moment for Shannon, her manager (and mum) Denise Kelly, her father, brothers and sisters, and manager Robbie Campion who were all present on the day to cheer the Lions on. Well done to all involved.
