  1. Lovely website! I have become very interested in Durrow after reading a family letter I found, regarding the funeral (“the largest was seen in Durrow for a long time,” according to his son, Peter) of Patrick Donohoe (my mother’s Great Grandfather), in December 1901. Hope to find out more about my Irish roots!

  2. Hello, my name is Bryce Binnie and I am from Australia. I am trying to make contact with a family from Durrow who I met when travelling through the town in late 2000. They are Donal and Madge Carroll. I believe Madge may be in her mid-late 60′s by now.

A bit of background to the story…

My father, Wallace, had a pen-friend back in the 1950′s called Dolores Carroll, from Durrow. In 1962 he was travelling around the world with his father and they passed through Durrow and asked at a local hotel if they knew of Dolores Carroll (a teenager at the time). She lived just a few doors up so they knocked on the door and said hello, which was a nice surprise for everyone involved.

Then many years later, in late 2000, I was travelling through Ireland and decided to pass through Durrow and also called into a local pub and asked about the Carroll family. My father told me that Dolores had a brother called Donal, and I asked after him. The lady behind the bar knew Donal jnr, and phoned his mother (Madge I believe, Donal snr’s wife), and she invited me around for a cup of tea. It was a wonderful experience, and her sister-in-law (the sister of Donal and Dolores, who’s name I forget) also came around and she actually remembered the day that the two Australian travelers came to Durrow back in 1962.

We exchanged contact details, however since then I have lost these.

My father and mother are planning a trip to Ireland in June this year (2013), and would very much like to get in touch with anyone from this Carroll family (Dolores married a policeman and moved somewhere north of Dublin I think). I did some research via Google, and found a death notice for a Donal P Carroll from January 2005, which mentioned his wife Madge, so I assume that this is the same Donal and Madge that I visited. I was sad to read of Donal’s illness and passing.

I believe that Durrow is a fairly small community and most people seem to know of each other, so I thought that I would post a comment here and ask if anyone knew of the Carroll family from Durrow?

If anyone knows any of the people I mentioned above, I would very much appreciate you passing on my email address to them and ask them to get in touch. I know my parents would be thrilled to visit Durrow again and hopefully meet some members of the Carroll family.

    My contact email is: brycebinnie@hotmail.com

    Thanks,

    Bryce Binnie.

  8. My gg Grandmother, Catherine Hawkins(see last post) was married in 1838/39 to Gardiner Curtis, not sure if she married in Durrow, but as she would have been only 16 years old at the time there is a good chance she did, she went on to have 8 children all born in Dublin, i can not find a marriage cert for her and that is what i am searching for, would love to hear from any decendants or any information that might help
    Thank You

  11. What a wonderful website!

I am Australian and, although white settlement is relatively recent in Australia, all my great grandparents were born here but one. He was Charles Samuel Dixon, and he was born in Durrow. About 1841, I think.

I am quite new to family history. I can’t find when he came to Australia, but I know his father was Henry Dixon and, according to the Griffith Valuation, Henry controlled a large portion of land in Durrow in 1851, and had a house on the square as well.

I have checked phone directories online, and can find no Dixons in Durrow today.

I would be very grateful for any information on my family in your village. We might possibly be able to visit in May-July 2013.

    Best wishes for Christmas
    Sue Hempel

  15. Hi, my name is Hamish Purdey and I’m originally Australian but now live in London. My mother and I are coming to Durrow in July for a quick trip to see the place that my great-great-grand father was born. Edmund Dullard (1842-1931) left Dirreen Durrow in approx 1865 to start farming land in Australia. He left with his two brothers, Thomas and James. Sometimes the family name is spelt Dollard. His parents were Michael Dollard and Ellen Bowe who were also from the region. After 14 years in Australia he wrote to another Irish family he knew and they sent out their daughter, Maria Agnes Scott and they were married in 1879 in Kyneton in Victoria. We are excited about coming to Dirreen and to Durrow and if anyone has any hints then let us know! Message me for my public tree at ancestry.com if interested! See also the family home in Dirreen – if anyone knows the address, please let me know! Thanks again!

  16. I am planning a trip to Ireland in September 2012 and plan a brief visit to Durrow. Some of my relations came from the Durrow area and I am always looking for information on them. I have a post card from a Mrs. Laurence (Mary) Fitzpatrick and her mother, Mrs. Julia Kennedy with their photo along with a young girl. Address was Tubberboe, Durrow, Leix and dates from between 1923 and and 1940. Sent to my great-grandmother in Ohio. Also have confirmed Doran and Palmer family relatives residing in the area of Ballyouskill, attanagh, kilkenny. My great-great-grandfather William Doran and siblings Patrick C., Michael, and Catherine immigrated to Akron, Ohio USA in the 1860s. Other siblings Ellen, Judith, & John stayed in Ireland.
If any local residents have any information on these folks, I would appreciate it.

  17. The scenery of County Laois was the inspiration for the covers of my first two books: “A Biblical Journey through the Irish Year” and “Singing on the Journey Home.”
I hope to visit the Durrow area next weekend (16th June) and look forward to renewing old acquaintances – and being inspired again!

  18. Happy St Patrick’s Day to everyone at home and abroad.

Wishing you the very best launching the Durrow Leafy Loop Walks next Sunday – I walked the Leafy Loop last Friday and thought is was fantastic – well done to all concerned – very well marked and the addition of the APP was also great – the walk is superbly writtenabout, points of interest marked and very easy to follow – thanks to the lady in the Hotel on Friday morning -Laois Tourism – name escapes me – she printed maps etc for us – Noelle Dunphy who looks after the walks there also gave us a call to see how we were getting on – will be back again -Fergal Somers, Ballyhoura Failte, Kilfinane, Limerick

My mother, Carol Carroll and my bother, Gary Triggs, visited Durrow and met his cousins. Can you please forward this message to someone in the Carroll family? I’d love to correspond with them.

  21. To Denise Bye regarding Isaac, son of Henry Francis.
I have a few copies of some Durrow/Abbeyleix Baptisms from the early 1800′s. It is mainly centred around my own family research, so I’m not sure if their names will appear there, but I will have a look for you and let you know if I find anything.
    All the bext,
    Sheridan
