WRESTLING MANIA COMES TO DURROW! Currently on their country wide tour, Stars of American Wrestling are making a stop in Durrow, County Laois. The Durrow Development Forum, presents a fundraising event where the powerhouses of Grand Slam Wrestling are getting set to put on an unforgettable show at the Castle Arms Hotel on Saturday the 6th of April at 7pm.
An evening of WWE style action will include the body slamming Heavyweights and the top rope flying Cruiserweight dare-devils. One wrestler who will be hitting the Castle Arms Hotel is the Heavyweight Wrestling Champion, The American Bruiser – Brody Steel. The muscle packed, chain yielding roughhouse provides an intimidating battle for any challenger. The Bruiser recently stated he has only one vision for his debut in Durrow and that is to steamroll any wrestler who gets in his way!
Stepping up to the challenge is a Midlands man who has been given a huge opportunity to take on the reigning Champion. James McManus has been performing as a professional wrestler for over 8 years and now his hard work has finally paid off. As a teenager, James was in awe of wrestling superstars such as The Rock, Stone Cold Steve Austin and John Cena. Watching these superhero-like characters inspired him to follow his dream and do everything in his powers to step inside the ropes.
Having performed on shows the length and breadth of the island of Ireland, in addition to completing tours of the UK and Europe, James is motivated now more than ever to put on the performance of a lifetime in Durrow and take the Heavyweight Championship from the American Bruiser! The Grand Slam Wrestling Show has a family friendly theme with action, drama and comedy for young and old to enjoy. After a jam packed card of exciting matches, fans in attendance who have opted to pick up a Backstage Pass at the merchandise stand will have the

ART EXHIBITION: Local artists, Marie Moylan and Sandra Blanchfield are launching an exciting joint Art Exhibition in the exhibition space in Abbeyleix Library at 6pm on the Thursday the 4th of April. The work is for the most part their interpretation of landscapes and seascapes around the country. Hence, they are calling the exhibition ‘Double Vision of Natural Ireland’. The exhibition runs for the month of April within the library hours. All are most welcome.

LIVE WELL EXPO: All roads lead to Portlaoise College on Thursday the 4th of April for the return of the Live Well Expo. The first running of this event in April last year saw crowds of almost 1000 attend the health and well-being event. The event is a joint initiative by Age Friendly & Healthy Laois, in response to what they heard during consultations – the need to be aware that support and services are available. This event brings support and services in person to Portlaoise college, so that you can have a chat, receive advice and be directed to the support required. The event is to be opened once more by Laois’ age friendly ambassador, the ever energetic and positive Anna May McHugh.
Already we have more than exhibitors confirmed to attend. Among the new stands ths year are national groups such as the Road Safety Authority, who will also be speaking, and the Decision Support Service. The Healthy Age Friendly Homes team will be there again so come along to meet them, and your Laois co-ordinator, who is now in place. The Health Service Executive will have a number of their services and supports represented on the day as will local community groups, such as pride of place winners Vicarstown, Stradbally and Timahoe activity
and wellness hub.
Overall, the exhibitors all have a common theme – supporting you to live well in Laois. DOG WALKERS! A reminder to clean up after your dog. We have Mutt Mitt dispensers and instructions on how to clean up after your dog, throughout Durrow. Dog fouling is a serious health risk and children can easily not see it and bring indoors on bikes, shoes, buggies and it’s a particular hazard to wheelchair users. DEFIBRILLATORS IN DURROW: We are lucky to have defibrillators in Durrow – one at the Gala Grocery Store and one at The Community Playground. It is vitally important that if you or anyone you know is unfortunate enough to need to use one, you must inform Susan in the Gala Grocery Store as soon as possible afterwards, as the pads need to be replaced – NOTE: They are single use! Reconstituted Ossory Diocesan Pastoral Council ODPC – In July 2023 Bishop Niall established a working group to consider the form of Diocesan Pastoral Council that would best serve the Diocese at this time. The group met several times and consulted widely with other dioceses and pastoral advisers as to best practice. The group submitted proposals to Bishop Niall at the end of August. Taking these proposals into account, Bishop Niall has appointed the following as members of the new ODPC: Bishop Niall Coll, Frs. Dan Carroll, Dan Bollard, Martin Delaney, Ms. Ann Daly, Ms. Sarah Rice, Ms. Brid Duffy, Mr. Diarmuid Healy, Mr. John Shortall, Ms. Gemma Mulligan, Sr. Helen Maher. Sarah Rice accepted the role of Chairperson. The first meeting of the new ODPC took place on 19th January last.

NEW GDO: The Harps along with support from Laois GAA have successfully acquired a G.D.O. (Games Development Officer) for the coming year. This will enable us to teach kids the skills of the game in both Parish schools as well as club based programs.
APPEAL – We are looking for old hurls and old helmets which can be dropped off at the Clubhouse at any time.The condition of the hurls/helmets is not important as we will try to refurbish them and put them to good use for our young and upcoming Hurling and Camogie players.
JUVENILE CLUB: The Harps Juvenile Draw – This year marks the 40th anniversary of our club. To mark the occasion the Juvenile club will be having their draw on the May Bank Holiday Weekend instead of our normal Easter Draw. As always some great prizes are on offer in the raffle. Any juvenile member who sells a card will get a free retro jersey which is based on our first jersey when the club was formed. We appeal to everyone to support the juveniles and best of luck in the draw.

The ETP brings together the best young talent in the country in seven regions for specialised training over the holidays. A fantastic achievement for the boys, and their coaches. ACADEMY CONCLUDES – The 2023-24 Academy is almost ready to draw to a close. It has been our biggest yet with 75 children participating each Saturday afternoon. It’s a joy for our club to run the Academy each year and it would not be possible without the army of volunteers (aka parents) who step up week after week to assist, not only with the coaching but also the collecting of money, the shop and parking.
A particular note of thanks to Eoin Lalor who has taken responsibility for the Academy for the past two years (in addition to coaching one of our adult teams). A special note of thanks also to Kim’s Asian takeaway, Durrow for their sponsorship of the Academy. It was very much appreciated. Thank you to all the parents for your ongoing support of our club.
