LAOIS BIODIVERSITY WEEK 2025: There are four local events taking place this week: On Wednesday May 21st a Nature and Bees Workshop will take place in Durrow Library at 10am; then on Thursday May 22nd at 7pm a Water Quality Sampling Workshop will take place at Bobs bar in conjunction with the Nore Vision Group. Next up, join us for a Bat Walk in Dunmore Woods, Durrow on Saturday May 24th next at 8.30pm. Finally, on Sunday afternoon May 25th we meet in Bunlacken Brew Car Park, Cullohill for a Nature and Heritage Farm Walk at 2.30pm. We hope to see you there!

PRESENTAION CONCERT: Vocem Darú Choir are hosting an evening of music and song to present funds raised for Cois Nore and Cuisle Cancer Centre. Join us at the beautiful St Michael and All Angels Church, Abbeyleix on Tuesday 27th May at 8pm. Special guests will also perform on the night. Admission is free.

SESKIN WINDFARM MEETING: A Community Information evening will be held in the CYMS hall in Durrow on Wednesday 28th May at 8pm. We will have guest speakers on the night and will be inviting our local TDs and County Councillors from both Laois and Kilkenny. We invite all members of our communities of Durrow, Lisdowney and Ballyragget to attend and get all the information regarding this proposed development. It really cannot be understated the detrimental effect this Windfarm will have on our communities should it proceed.

CULLOHILL TIDY TOWNS: A big thanks to Laurence O’Reilly from SEAI who made a presentation to 26 of our local club reps / community members on Monday night in relation to sustainable energy grants/ supports for households and local clubs last week in Cullohill.

SHOPFRONT AND STREET FACADE GRANTS AVAILABLE: The Business Support Unit of Laois County Council are delighted to announce the launch of the Durrow Façade Enhancement Scheme. Each year we offer the scheme in different towns, this year we chose Durrow.
The focus of this scheme is to support the upgrade and enhancement of shopfronts and street facades within a designated area for Durrow village. Under this Scheme, a grant is available for painting your property. Grant funding will be provided at 75% of the total painting costs subject to a maximum of €750. Grantees must cover the initial costs before receiving grant funds.
The following types of premises are considered eligible:
* Commercial
* Residential
* Unoccupied premises

DOG WALKERS! A reminder to clean up after your dog. We have Mutt Mitt dispensers and instructions on how to clean up after your dog, throughout Durrow. Dog fouling is a serious health risk and children can easily not see it and bring indoors on bikes, shoes, buggies and it’s a particular hazard to wheelchair users. If you’d like to become a green dog walker we have information in the Post Office and Library regarding the initiative. Please be responsible and clean up after your pet!
LEAFY LOOP WALKS! Please note that ALL dogs must be kept on a lead, without exception on the Leafy Loop in Durrow, this includes Dunmore, Clonageera, Bishops Wood, Derry Wood, Knockatrina and The Course. The Leafy Loop traverses across Coillte Woodlands and Farmlands with protected species and farm animals. Your Dog is not an exception to be left off a lead.

IRISH CANCER SOCIETY: The Irish Cancer Society’s Transport Service is seeking compassionate volunteer drivers in your community. Your time can help to continue the vital service of providing transport for patients attending cancer treatment appointments. If you have a minimum of two days per month to spare, a valid driving license, and a safe, reliable vehicle, you’re the perfect candidate to make a significant difference. Your generosity can ease the journey for many during a challenging time, offering comfort and support when it’s needed most.
Full training will be provided. There are a number of essential post-drive administration tasks that will require either existing knowledge of basic computer or IT skills, or the willingness to acquire such skills (such as scanning and uploading documents or attending virtual meetings). COIS NORE CANCER SUPPORT CENTRE: Cois Nore Outreach will be visiting the following local venues: Dr. Hogan’s Rooms, The Square, Ballyragget from 10am to 12pm on Mondays and Mill Family Resource Centre, Urlingford from 10am to 12pm on Fridays. Funeral Masses on our Website – In order to comply with GDPR regulations recordings of funeral masses will be available on our website for one month only. All previous funeral masses have been removed. Copies of past funerals are available to family members on request. Contact the Parish Office regarding the same.

Restoration Fund Draw – Tickets are now available from the Parish Office for the Diocese of Ossory Cathedral Restoration Fund Draw. Tickets cost €120 for twelve monthly draws. Ten prizes each month – Top prize €2,000.

Church Cleaning – Cullohill & Durrow: Thank you to Oldtown for cleaning the church in Cullohill in March and to Team C in Durrow This month it falls to Bunlacken & Cullohill Mountain in Cullohill and in Durrow, Team D will clean the church during the month of April.

VISITS – Do you have a family member or friend in a nursing home? Sr. Anita and I like to visit parishioners who are living in Nursing Homes or other Care settings. Unfortunately, we don’t have accurate knowledge about all of our parishioners from Durrow and Cullohill who are in Nursing Homes. I’m asking if you have a relative or know of someone from the parish in any Nursing Home or long-term care centre to please let us know.
