BIG DEVELOPMENT TO GET UNDERWAY AT LIONS AFC: The Lions AFC have just Announced a €650,000 Astro Development Project this week. The Lions AFC is delighted to announce the confirmation of the development of a full size astro pitch valued at €650,000, marking a significant investment in the future of the club and facilities. Following a comprehensive planning and tendering process, Lions are now proud to confirm that a contractor has now been officially appointed, and works are scheduled to commence in early June 2025, running through to September 2025.
This ambitious project will deliver a range of upgrades and enhancements that will benefit players, coaches, members, and the wider community. The club will hold a fundraiser in the Castle Arms on Saturday the 31st of May to assist with the funding of this exciting project. Making it’s debut in the area ‘Songo Music Bingo’ will be the most fun you can have on a night out….hear the songs and mark them on your bingo card with lots of prizes to won! Tickets are €20 and will be available locally and can also be purchased on Eventbrite by searching for Songo Music Bingo (no online booking fees).
DURROW & CULLOHILL FLOWER CLUB: The Club are hosting a talk by T J Maher of Patthana Garden in Wicklow entitled “Gounded in the Garden” An artist’s guide to creating a beautiful garden in harmony with nature. SHOPFRONT AND STREET FACADE GRANTS AVAILABLE: The Business Support Unit of Laois County Council are delighted to announce the launch of the Durrow Façade Enhancement Scheme. Each year we offer the scheme in different towns, this year we chose Durrow.
The focus of this scheme is to support the upgrade and enhancement of shopfronts and street facades within a designated area for Durrow village. Under this Scheme, a grant is available for painting your property. Grant funding will be provided at 75% of the total painting costs subject to a maximum of €750. Grantees must cover the initial costs before receiving grant funds.

SPRING TIME FLOWERS – ADVICE NOTICE: While picking wildflowers has been a traditional pastime, it’s generally discouraged in Ireland due to the risks of over-picking and the protection of certain species, conservation is important and leaving the flowers for all to enjoy is more beneficial.
You can pick ramsons (also known as wild garlic) in Ireland, but it’s important to identify them correctly and to forage responsibly, ensuring you are picking from public land or have permission from the landowner. Over picking is disastrous and following the 1/20 rule is strongly recommended and encouraged.
It’s illegal to pick or dig up wild bluebells and vital to ensure if purchasing same, to make sure your new plants have been cultivated by a reputable source and that they haven’t been imported from abroad. Bluebells from abroad will destroy our Native Irish Bluebells. Dunnes Garden Centre Durrow will advise best on this.
Please don’t pick our Leucojum aestivum, commonly called the summer snowflake, these are growing wild on our walkways and are also protected.
COMMUNITY SAFETY FUND 2025: The Community Safety Fund 2025 is open now for applications. The annual fund allows for the proceeds of crime, seized by the Criminal Assets Bureau (CAB) and An Garda Síochána, to be directed into local projects to support and enhance community safety. This year, €4 million is available, which is double the original allocation of €2 million when the fund first opened for applications in 2022, and grants range from €20,000 to €150,000. DOG WALKERS! A reminder to clean up after your dog. We have Mutt Mitt dispensers and instructions on how to clean up after your dog, throughout Durrow. Dog fouling is a serious health risk and children can easily not see it and bring indoors on bikes, shoes, buggies and it’s a particular hazard to wheelchair users. If you’d like to become a green dog walker we have information in the Post Office and Library regarding the initiative. Please be responsible and clean up after your pet!

Please note that ALL dogs must be kept on a lead, without exception on the Leafy Loop in Durrow, this includes Dunmore, Clonageera, Bishops Wood, Derry Wood, Knockatrina and The Course. LONLINESS SURVEY: Sarah Keegan, the director of a small organisation called WeLearn, based in Mountnugent, Cavan. They are mostly concerned with researching topics linked to Well-Being, and then developing short programmes and courses to address areas of interest, based on our research findings.
They have one research project ongoing at the moment, which is seeking to engage adults over the age of 55 to learn more about their understanding and experience of loneliness. They are completing this research with adults in Ireland, Spain and France, so that they can make recommendations at a European level to address the health impacts of loneliness on adults as they age.
This research is developed to further investigate, on a local level, the findings from the first ever European Survey on Loneliness. Ireland was ranked as the European country with the highest prevalence of loneliness, with 20% of our population experiencing loneliness on a regular basis.
To gather local insights from adults in our community, they have prepared a short online survey which should take 8-10 minutes to complete.

Church Cleaning – Cullohill & Durrow: Thank you to Oldtown for cleaning the church in Cullohill in March and to Team C in Durrow This month it falls to Bunlacken & Cullohill Mountain in Cullohill and in Durrow, Team D will clean the church during the month of April.

Unfortunately, we don’t have accurate knowledge about all of our parishioners from Durrow and Cullohill who are in Nursing Homes. I’m asking if you have a relative or know of someone from the parish in any Nursing Home or long-term care centre to please let us know. U12 GIRLS: Our U12 girls took on Freebooters tonight in the U12 Cup Quarter Final. It was a proper end to end game that went the distance at 0-0 after extra time. Both teams gave a fantastic performance with lions going close on several occasions. The game went to penalties with lions coming out as 3-2 winners. Lions are now to take on Kilkenny United in the Cup Semi Final.
