Durrow High Nelly Club was formed in June 2011, and was launched in Bob’s Bar Durrow. The aim of the club is to provide fun, fitness and a healthier lifestyle to all members of the local community. The club meets every Wednesday and Sunday, and turns out in their old attire, for a leisurely cycle on various different routes throughout the local countryside.

Our activities include fundraising for Meals on Wheels, The Old Folks Party and various other small charities in the surrounding area. It was decided in 2011 that we would attempt a world record for the largest gathering of high Nellys in the world. As a result, on the 16th October 2011, people came from all across Ireland with their High Nellys and gathered on the green in Durrow to take part in this World record attempt. We now hold the World Record for 347 High Nelly Bicycles in the one place at the one time.

As a result of our club success, there are now 5 other High Nelly Clubs in Laois and growing, all of which are co-operating hand in hand. Our venture for this year is ‘Wheel On The Green’ which will take place on the 14th October 2012. This will be achieved by forming the largest High Nelly Wheel in the world.

For the visitor coming to Durrow we have the only High Nelly bike hire in Ireland called the ‘Elephant Trail’. All routes on this trail can be downloaded through a new app for iPhone or Android called ‘EveryTrail’. We also boast the only High Nelly Bicycle museum in Ireland, with bikes dating back to the 1920’s. This museum alongside the club makes Durrow and Bob’s Bar the High Nelly Capital of Ireland and well worth a visit.
