DURROW COMMUNITY SERVICES: Durrow Community Services is a Community Employment Scheme that has been in operation in Durrow for the last 17 years. The department of Employment affairs and Social Protection (DEASP) provide financial support to this scheme in the form of allowances and funding. Persons availing of the scheme, in addition to providing services to their own community, can avail of subsidised training. This training can relate in particular to the position on the scheme, or in an unrelated area where the participant feels that such training could increase their opportunity to gain employment. Whilst partaking of the scheme, each person is entitled and encouraged to seek other employment, without a risk of losing their entitlements. Childcare provision is also supported by the scheme. DCS can provide a great opportunity for any person interested in getting back to the working environment. However there are certain qualifying conditions:

  • Persons interested must be in receipt of a DEASP payment for at least 12 months.
  • Persons must be over the age of 21 years.
  • Any person availing of the scheme will retain their DEASP payment with the addition of an extra
€22.50 allowance from the scheme. The minimum payment for any CE employees is €225.50. Each
participant will be expected to work 19.5 hrs per week. The arrangement of working hours is
reasonably flexible, and can be adapted in some cases to suit the needs of the participant.
