OPEN DAY: Fruitlawn Garden lies just outside Abbeyleix off the Ballacolla road and is part of the Laois Garden Trail. The garden was started nearly twenty years ago by Arthur Shackleton, a well-known garden designer, originally from Dublin where his father had an outstanding garden called, Beech Park in Clonsilla. Many of the plants at Fruitlawn came from there.
Fruitlawn Garden is just over an acre of walled-in garden divided up into different areas; large perennial borders, an orchard, a Hornbeam tunnel, an Oak copse, an extensive vegetable and fruit garden. There is a big collection of climbing and shrub roses which will be looking good on 1st July.
There is a large lawn where children can play and teas, coffees and cakes will be served. A large collection of rare and unusual plants will be available for sale at keen prices. Many not to be found elsewhere. All in all well worth a visit!
